Firewall Proxy DNS Location

Reference:        Firewall and Proxy Information for Beyond FTP Connections

This selection allows you to choose the manner in which destination address names are resolved.  The SOCKS 4 protocol requires that all domain names be resolved locally.  The protocol accepts only an Internet address.  The SOCKS 5 protocol specifies that the firewall or proxy server be capable of resolving domain names using DNS servers on the public side of the firewall.  The selections are:

            Local Only

All domain names are resolved be Beyond FTP prior to initiating the call.  This is the only valid value for SOCKS 4 connections.

Remote Only

The destination address is sent to the firewall without translation.  Any domain name lookups are performed by the firewall or proxy server.

Both, Local & Remote

Beyond FTP first attempts to resolve the name locally.  If this is not successful, and the SOCKS 5 protocol is in use, the name will be passed to the firewall or proxy server for resolution.

Note: For connections to FTP servers, please see FTP Connection Options.
