Encryption Key Source Control

Reference:        Configure Services Dialog

This series of four radio buttons controls the source for all Beyond FTP encryption keys.  Select Keys locally controlled if all keys will be managed by the local administrator.  This is the default, and is the equivalent to versions before 2.6.02.  Each administrator is responsible for entering and maintaining the key phrases.  In this environment, both sides of a connection must have entered the same key to allow communication.

Select Key client when this installation will retrieve keys from the Beyond FTP Key Server at the indicated update time.   Only the first, or seed key must be manually entered.  From that time, all keys will be retrieved from the Key Server.  Local control of keys is no longer allowed.

Select Key server when this installation will provide keys to other key clients.  All keys are locally controlled, and are returned to key clients as requested.  A key client MUST have an appropriate security account to retrieve keys, as well as an active key that allows encrypted communications.

Select Key server and client when this installation will both retrieve keys from a key server and provide them to key clients.  Like the client, only the first key may be manually entered.  Local control of keys is otherwise disabled.  However, users with appropriate authority may retrieve keys from this site.
